Beauty Worn on TV

Recreate This Iconic 90s Makeup Look in 3 Simple Steps

September 6, 2017

Everything was better in the 90s. The music was louder, the TV shows were funnier, and the style was on point. It’s no surprise that there are many beauty trends from this era that have made a comeback in recent years including dark lipstick, french tips and nude gloss.

One character who always gives me major nostalgia is Whitley Gilbert from A Different World. She was the ultimate 90s beauty and fashion icon; her makeup was always simple, but sharp like her personality. Whitley’s makeup bag consisted of three things: a brow pencil, nude gloss and eyeliner. Although the show ended over 20 years ago, her 90s style still inspires me.

90s lovers, rejoice! Here’s how you can incorporate this retro makeup look into your own beauty routine. The best part is that you can steal her signature look in three simple steps, with products you already own.

1. Give your brows an angular shape.
Whitley is known for having dramatically arched brows. Luckily, your brows don’t have to be as sharp. Go for a modern look by giving your brows a slight curve with a brow pencil. If you’re not a fan of how it looks, you can always erase the line and start over!

2. Go for a nude lip.
Sometimes, wearing minimal makeup makes a bigger statement. Instead of rocking your usual bold red lip, apply a nude gloss that compliments your skin tone, natural lip color. I always go for a rich mocha while Whitley’s lips are more of a berry.

3. Define your top and bottom lash line with eyeliner.
Gently trace an even line from the inner corner of your eyes to the outer edge. After doing this repeatedly, go over your bottom lash line. Make sure you steer clear of your inner rim so your eyes don’t tear up. This will really make your eyes pop!

I love the 90’s too. the music (boy bands like backstreet boys), as well as the beauty and fashion. 90’s makeup look is pretty much simple but it projects timeless beauty. I am not into heavy makeup so I think I can wear the 90’s makeup until I get old 😀 LOL

I love the 90’s. And the 80’s:) It’s so fun to look back and see what was so hot and then see where we are now. I love sharing the “old” looks with my daughter. She finds it hysterical:)

I always try to pretend that the 90s were only yesterday so I don’t feel as old, ha!

Agree about the 90s but the 80s was not to bad either. Wish you had pictures to go along because I am worthless with make up so some image would have helped!😘

I love the vibe of 90’s, both in terms of fashion as well as makeup. Your tips are really good for recreating this look but some pictures would have aided in visual understanding though.

You have written a wonderful post. Even I like the idea of recreating the fashion that we had in 90’s. The fashionable cloths of 90’s and yes for ladies, the makeup.

Great post! The 90’s was a wonderful time for fashion, and who would turn a side eye to Whitley Gilbert’s wardrobe?

This was fun to read! I’ve realized how old I am now though since the ’90s are considered retro! 😂
